Google’s Artificial Intelligence program learns like people do

codes on a screen

A general artificial intelligence program developed by the British company DeepMind, a Google subsidiary, can learn in a more natural way than a human being, using his previous knowledge to solve the next problems.

Researchers who reported in the PNAS journal, according to British Guardian, reported that the new program – which manages almost as well as a man – has now overcome past difficulties, which tallied the learning process from the machines.

The most important step forward is that the program learns to solve one problem after another, based on the knowledge and skills it has acquired along the way, without forgetting its accumulated experience.

The ultimate goal is to create machines with generic artificial intelligence that reflect human intelligence in a perfectly natural and integrated way, something that has not yet been made possible.

If we are going to have computer programs that are smarter and more useful then they should have the ability to learn in a sequential manner,” said DeepMind researcher James Kirkpatrick.

The ability to remember old knowledge and skills, which they then use to solve the next problems, is something that happens naturally to people, but not to the machines so far. Most artificially intelligent computers are based on so-called neural networks, e.g. learn to play chess or poker through endless rectal-error tests. However, to learn another game later, the “smart” computer must first erase what he had learned about previous games (something called “destructive oblivion”).

The new study makes an important step to stop computers from forgetting the useful things they have learned. The researchers were inspired by neuroscience, which shows that animals – and humans – are constantly learning to keep in their brain those neural connections that relate to past knowledge critical to their survival (eg how to hide from predators or how to find food).

Similarly, the new method of learning mechanics, before proceeding to the next problem, distinguishes which neural network connections to the computer are the most important for what has been learned up to that point, so that they will not be changed or deleted when added the new knowledge.

So the machine can reuse what it has learned, as the experiments have shown, in which the Artificial Intelligence program was asked to play various video games. Thanks to the knowledge of one game, the machine could learn to play the next games faster, as people do.

However, for the time being, it remains unclear if, thanks to the new method, he can learn to play not only faster but also better many different games than he would if – by the traditional method – he specialized in a single game .

We have shown that the program can learn successively different things, but we have not shown that it can do better because it has learned them successively. There is therefore room for improvement, “said Kirkpatrick. He acknowledged, however, that “we are still far from a general artificial intelligence and there are many scientific challenges that need to be overcome.”

Inside a Tornado

A photographer and a fearless storm hunter have spent the last three years of their lives, capturing the special beauty of this dangerous natural phenomenon. They have recorded more than 600 tornadoes in 16 states of America.

Mitch Dobrowner collaborated with Roger Hill storm hunter and traveling 65,000 kilometers captured in their lens monsoons, hurricanes and the “mother of the tornadoes”, the powerful “supercell”.

Lighting meets volcanoes

Volcanoes and lightning can offer a beautiful spectacle on their own. But think about what can happen when a photo includes both together. These images, which show the beauty and the power of nature in the most clear way, have been pulled into Icelandic and Indonesian volcanoes.

This phenomenon is quite common and has been photographed since 1940. Although many think that these two phenomena (lightning and volcanic eruptions) are accidental, Adela Crozier, a geologist from Australia, says: “Mostly these lightning are associated with the explosive volcanic activity that produces magma and sends volcanic ash into the atmosphere.

The lightning may have happened from the charged particles of ash ejected as a column from the volcano. But volcanologists are not entirely sure which mechanism is creating them in a volcanic eruption, “explains Crozier. The phenomenon remains mysterious for scientists.

New network of marine parks in Australia

photo of a fish on corals

The largest network of marine parks in the world will be created by Australia by protecting a sea area as large as India, where it will ban exploration for oil and gas extraction and will impose severe restrictions on commercial fishing activities.

Australia’s marine shelters will increase from 27 to 60 under the new plan, covering more than three million square kilometers or one-third of the country’s marine waters.

New marine shelters will be created from Perth Canyon southwest to Kangaroo Island off the southern shores of Australia but most importantly will be the protection of the Coral Sea surrounding the Great Coral Reef in northeast Australia, Environment Minister Tony Bear. “Under this plan, exploration for oil and gas extraction in marine national parks is prohibited and strict restrictions are imposed on commercial fishing activities,” he said.

However, as mentioned by the RES-EIA, environmental protection organizations argue that the actions taken do not cover the protection of marine mammals from the effects of petroleum and gas exploration in many areas. This is because entire areas of western Australia where Shell and Woodside Petroleum oil companies have been licensed for research will continue to do so.

These are bad news for whales and dolphins because they live in many of the areas where oil activities will continue,” said Matthew Collis of the International Fund for the Protection of Animals.

Floating solar island promises green vacations

sun island 2

Unforgettable holidays promises the “Solar Floating Resort“, the luxurious island that floats and is exclusively powered by renewable energy.

The “sunny resort”, 18 meters long and with a capacity of six people, travels like a yacht on the open sea but at the same time offers the comfort of a luxurious hotel.

In addition to a kitchen, dining room and lounge, it also has a jacuzzi. Its surface is covered with photovoltaic panels, which exploit the solar radiation and feed the vessel with electricity.

The idea for the solar resort was inspired by Marco Puzzolante, an ambitious designer.

The solar resort is a unique construction. Partly it is a residence, partly yachting and partly submarine. It is energy self-sufficient, it does not pollute and fit harmoniously into the natural environment, “says the designer, who plans to allocate the solar resort to large beach hotels.

New robotic system for surgeries

robot hands

A robotic surgical system worn by hand is developed by a team of Greek and British researchers.

These extra-skeletal tools allow surgeons to make their physical subtle movements while allowing them to “feel”, “see”, control and navigate the surgical environment in the patient’s body.

This robotic medical technology, is being developed in the framework of the European SMARTsurg program, which was recently launched and will be completed by the end of 2019, with almost € 4 million of funding from the EU through Horizon 2020.

The program is co-ordinated by the Bristol Robotics Lab, jointly created by the University of West England and the University of Bristol. The robotic tool is based on a plan of the Greek Robotics Engineer Antonia Tzimanaki of the same workshop.

The Hellenic Center for Research and Technological Development (CERTH) and the Private Medical Center for Orthopedic Surgery for Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation (TheMIS) in Thessaloniki also participate in the program.

Robotic systems of this kind are designed to assist surgeons to improve their performance in urological, cardiovascular and orthopedic procedures, and in the future they can be used in more complex surgeries.

The extra-skeletal tool fits into the doctor’s hand and enters the patient’s body. It has a feel of touch on its robotic fingers, allowing the surgeon to “feel” the tissues and organs, as in a traditional surgery.

The tool will be combined with “smart” glasses (the French company Optinvent) that will be worn by surgeons and with which they will have a realistic live body image as they use the robotic hand-tool.

The GPS of the mobile locks down the GPS of the brain

If you use GPS on your mobile phone very often to find your destination, the news is not very pleasant for your natural GPS.

Frequent use of satellite navigation has the effect of shutting down areas of the brain used for the orientation and cognitive processing of alternative routes. So, as the years go by, people will become more and more incapable of finding the way for themselves.

Internal GPS is considered one of the many wonders of the brain and the discovery of related specialized nerve cells in the mouse brain hippocampus led to the Nobel Prize of Medicine / Physiology in 2014.

Researchers at University College London (UCL), led by Dr. Hugo Spears of the Department of Experimental Psychology, who published the journal Nature Communications, studied at the laboratory 24 volunteers who were asked to perform virtual paths in a SoHo simulation in the center of London, while studying their brain with imaging techniques.

The research focused on the brain activity of the hippocampus (involved in memory and orientation) and the prefrontal cortex (involved in planning and decision making).

When volunteers navigated in an area (the computer) only with their own forces, their brains showed particular activity, especially when they were testing new roads. But when the volunteers followed the outside GPS command, the same brain regions remained inactive.

When we have the technology to tell us which road to take, these areas of our brain do not respond. In a sense, our brain has ceased to be interested in the streets around us, “said Spears.

A previous British study had shown that the London hippocampus of the London taxi drivers is growing, the more they memorize the maze of the streets of the British capital. Something that is not happening in an area like New York’s impeccably “squared” Manhattan, but it is probably happening in a city like London or Athens.

Ten tips for going topless on the beach

topless woman sitting

The answer on how to enjoy topless bath during your summer vacation may seem obvious, but there are some things to keep in mind before making the decision to separate the top of your swimsuit.

For some women this way of bathing and sunbathing is the rule, but for others it can be something that was always in the back of their minds and they never dared it.

For those of you who think it seriously, we give you ten practical tips to enjoy your topless bath this summer!

1. Check your destination. It depends on which beach or which country you have chosen for your holiday. In some countries, topless bathing is a criminal offense, so do not ruin your vacation by transferring the rest to a police station.

2. Do not compare yourself. We have all seen these beautiful, perfectly tanned women with their high legs and sculpted bodies that roam the beach wearing the tiny bottom of their bikini. Do not mind, in fact few of us are so lucky. Take your cocktail in hand and soak up the sun.

3. Think about what kind of beach you are. If you are on a deserted beach with your companion and friends, do not even think about it. On a family beach though, with little kids running around you, it is good not to dare it.

4. Be discreet. By this we mean that the best way is discretion. It is not necessary to get rid of unnecessary clothes in a way that will stimulate the interest of everyone else.

5. Refresh sunscreen frequently. In the sensitive area of the breast, which is unusual to remain exposed to the sun, you should often put sunscreen with a high protection index. Otherwise, the painful consequences will follow you for the rest of your vacation.

6. Try not to blush when someone is talking to you. If you are fully aware, there is no reason to be ashamed.

7. Explain beforehand to your partner that the only reason you decided to make topless bathing is tan, not the erotic games with people around you, as he may think.

8. “I do not like the idea that other men are looking at you.” Do not let him fill you with remorse. Just ask him if he looks at other topless girls. The answer will certainly not, so why is it worried?

9. If you need some glasses of wine to decide it better let it for this summer. You are not ready yet.

10. Enjoy it. You do not make topless to fill anxiety and guilt. If you feel so enjoy your bathing whatever you wear.

Bombobudur, Java, Indonesia – A travel that is worth making it

How many trips can we really do in our lives? It goes without saying that both the length of life and the financial margin of each of us is not enough to visit all of the destinations.

Borobudur, Java, Indonesia

If you love the unique landscapes, this is an indispensable destination for you.

This monument, built in the 9th century and buried under volcanic ash for centuries, has hundreds of Buddha statues and stupas (large vaulted constructions) that offer a unique spectacle at sunrise. Logically, Borobudur is very popular and attracts many visitors. However, if you decide to spend the night in the nearby village, you can visit it before it opens to the public, thus enjoying the impressive picture without the crowds of tourists.

Full of craters the planet Mars

Planet Mars is full of craters created by the impact of meteorites, asteroids and other celestial bodies on its surface during its billions of years of existence.

Now, for the first time, scientists measured just how many craters they were, and they announced that they summed 636,000 with a diameter of more than one kilometer!

The research, led by Stewart Robbins of the University of Colorado, was presented in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets of the American Geophysical Association. The information on the craters comes from evidence collected over the years about the ship’s missions that have been either orbiting Mars or whether they have done – and still do – fieldwork on its territory.

The database that has been created, the largest one for the “red planet”, gives more light to Mars’ history and, among other things, will help to better date the individual parts of its territory, says the AMP.

Many of the large craters that have come from a strong impact are thought to have created hydrothermal systems, which in turn may have been hospitable environments for the growth of micro-organisms, provided of course that there was water at the Martian cortex.

On the other hand, the large bumps of asteroids and comets on a planet can cause massive extinction of life, as has happened on Earth.

Most of Mars’s smaller craters are younger than the older ones and make up the vast majority. As on Earth, much of Mars’ surface has been “recycled” by geological processes, mainly from volcanic activity and soil erosion, and many older craters have disappeared.

A more accurate recording of Marine Craters will also help NASA better plan future manned missions on the “Red Planet”, both in terms of research interest and greater security.

Existing databases for the craters of other neighboring planets are clearly more incomplete. Only the craters with a diameter of more than 10 to 15 kilometers are fully recorded on the Moon, while in Hermes over 20 kilometers. Only 150 to 200 craters have been found on Earth, as the traces of most have disappeared over time.
